Zhejiang has a fairly advanced system of science and technology. The quality of scientific and technological achievements has been improved. The scientific and technological circle of the province has kept some fields leading the country, including the technologies of fluoride production, semi-conductor and membrane separation. Moreover, it has made great achievements in the research of technologies of electronic information, new materials, modern biology and pharmaceuticals. In the area of agriculture, Zhejiang is one of the nation's leading provinces in seed breeding, plant protection, fodder production, crop cultivation, biochemistry, the application of nuclear radiation and the comprehensive utilization of farm produce. And it also boasts the country in machinery, electronics, pharmaceuticals and chemicals in the field of industry. Some of these scientific achievements also lead the world. In 1998, the province won a total of 299 Science and Technology Advancement prizes, 16 State-level Science and Technology Advancement prizes and 1 National Technological Invention prize.


The new and high-tech industry is developing quickly. The province has established new and high-tech industrial structure with electric and communication equipment manufacturing as its mainstays, and has set up a high-tech industrial belt along the Shanghai-Hnagzhou-Ninbo Expressway. In 1998, the output value of the high-tech industry quadrupled that in 1993. The Hangzhou high-Tech Industrial Development Zone has developed quickly. In 1998, 218 new and high-tech enterprises were set up, and their output value reached 8.5 billion yuan, and another new and high-tech industrial development zone was established on the south of Qiantang River in Hangzhou.
