A Brief Introduction of Lishui Prefecture
Timber, waterpower, mineral deposit and wilderness are four major natural resources of Lishui prefecture that rank first in Zhejiang province. 69% of the prefecture is covered with forest, which gives it the name "Foliage Ocean of Zhejiang." The prefecture boasts potential waterpower of about 2 million kilowatt. So far, 57 mineral reserves are proved to scatter the prefecture and 460 mines are available for exploitation. Among its most important minerals, are gold, silver, lead, zinc, molybdenum, fluorite, pearlstone, pyrophylluite, dolianite, kaoline and mineral water, whose reserves claim an important place in Zhejiang, even in China. Among the 3100 species of plants and 505 species of vertebrate that are known to live in the prefecture, 64 are on the nation's preservation list, such as Baishanzu fir, Chinese tulip tree and Huanan tiger.
In the recent years, Lishui prefecture has seen a rapid development in industry. An industry structure that carries the features of mountainous area is burgeoning. Its main industries are wood and bamboo production, ore smelting, textile, clothes making, construction materials, pharmaceutical chemistry, electronic machinery and food processing. Over 180 brand name and high quality products of the prefecture sell well both within China and in about 100 foreign countries. Among them, wooden toys, mini electronic machinery, overedger, eider down products, gold pens and quality soaps are the most welcome. The three traditional handicrafts of the prefecture, Longquan celadon, Longquan swords, and Qingtian carved stones, enjoy high popularity both at home and abroad. A comprehensive agricultural development program is beginning to take effect. The prefecture is now a commercial base for editable fungus, dried and fresh fruit, bamboo and bamboo shoots, tea, commercial forest, oil tea, sericulture, herb medicine, vegetable and nuts. Products like Xianggu mushroom, tree fungus, Huiming tea, white pond lily, day lily, sun-cured tobacco, orange and oil tea are produced in large quantities and well known throughout Zhejiang.

1 East Lishui Tourism Zone Along Jinhua-Wenzhou railway and the main stream of River Ou are three scenic spots: Jinyun Xiandu national scenic spot, Qingtian Shimeng Cavern provincial scenic spot and Lishui Nanming Mountain & East-West Rock provincial scenic spot. Undulating mountain ridges, tortuous streams, peaceful valleys and weird-shaped rocks lure you to the heart of the zone where it is commonly described to excel "Guilin in handsomeness, Mount Huang in spectacularity, and mount Hua in exoticism." Legends have it that Dinghu hill in Xiandu is the place where Huangdi, the predecessor of our race, made pills of immortality and flew away from earth. A great amount of tablet inscription is found in Yuxu Palace and Niweng Cavern, which is said to be handed down by ancient Chinese scholars, making the two places a famous concentration of rock engraving in Zhejiang. Qingtian, the renounced hometown of overseas Chinese, bedazzled the world with its consummate skill of stone carving. 2 Xiangong Lake Vacation Resort The second largest man-made lake in Zhejiang, Xiangong Lake was formed when a dam was built on River Ou for the construction of Jinshuitan hydraulic power station. It gets its name from the nearby Xianxia Range Mountain and Donggong Mountain. The lake extends 66 kilometers and covers a total acreage of 34 square kilometers, cutting across Yunhe county and Longquan city. Along its zigzag course and within the mountain ranges, 56 lake bends and 36 islands are found. Limpid water mirrors verdurous mountains, with water side pavilions and terraces dappling around, it presents you with a picturesque view of south China landscape. The mild and salubrious climate of the place entitles it to a wonderful summer resort as well as a recuperation center. Jinshuitan hydraulic power station, whose original design is unique in China, and Shitang hydraulic power station, the first computer controlled station in China, lie just nearby and are worth visiting. 3 Jingning Shezu Culture Tourism Zone Shezu is a minority in China that has a long history. Jingning is the only autonomous county in China and the only minority autonomous region in east China. Shezu has a colorful culture and is best known for its beautiful legends, folk lore, pithy idioms, simple but virile dances, exquisite handicrafts, embellishments and clothes, and above all, clarion folk songs. Shezu people are gregarious, diligent, forbearing and modest, their wedding, funeral, and strange taboos mark them out as a race of distinction and individuality. The unaffected natural beauty of the place adds color to its culture and makes Jingning an irresistible place for tourists. 4 Ecological Zone Being the largest mountainous ecological tourism zone in east China, Lishui prefecture is a natural habitat for a great number of rare plants and wild animals. The three natural preserves of the prefecture: Fengyangshan-Baishanzu national natural reserve in Qingyuan and Longquan, Jiulong provincial natural reserve in Songyang covers 51% of the total acreage of natural reserves in Zhejiang. Together with several provincial forest parks (Longyuan in Longquan, Hushan in Suichang, and Baimashan, etc.), they preserve more than 200 species of plants from 170 families and many species of wild animals, among which, 40 plant species and 20 animal species are on the nation's reservation list (83% and 67%of the total number of Zhejiang province respectively). The Huangmao peak of Fengyang Mountain is the highest mountain peak in southeast China. Baishanzu fir is listed among the 12 dying plant species by international organizations, and Jiulong Mountain is honored as the "cradle for ancient plant species in east China." What makes these ecological resources more appealing are the cultural resources of the prefecture: Haochuan cultural relics in Suichang, Tang Xianzu memorial hall, Yanqing temple tower in Songyang and Xianggu mushroom of Qingyuan.
