Local Development Zones

Wuxi currently has eight development zones with provincial status inclusive of Wuxi Singapore Industrial Park, Wuxi National High-tech Development Zone, Yixing National Environmental Protection Industrial Park, Wuxi Lake Taihu National Tourist Resort Zone. By the end of May, 1996, an accumulated fund of RMB 4.6 billion has been invested in infrastructure development. So far, 1,232 enterprises have been granted approval to be tenants in the Zones inclusive of 377 enterprises with overseas investment. And 633 enterprises are operational. In 1995, all the development zones have created RMB 10 billion industrial output, USD 210 million of exports and RMB 600 million in tax and profit. The Zones have tthus become the locomotive of Wuxi's open economy.


WUXI NATIONAL HIGH-TECH DEVELOPMENT ZONE

This is a national high-tech development zone approved by the State Council, enjoying various preferential treatment from the state and local government.

It is situated in the southeast suburbs of Wuxi, 6 km away from the downtown area, accessible to the transportation network. There year's construction facilitates the initial development area of 5.45 km² and other 3 km² with regards to infrastructure. The capacity of daily tap water supply has reched 50,000 MT and it will soar to 120,000 MT as planned. A 110 KV substation has been put into operation iwth dual supply. meanwhile, the third substation is to be launched soon. Ten thousand IDD lines are available now and 100 thousand in the future. The suspanded highway with an investment of 520 million yuan, cogeneration plant and the peaking power plant have all gone operatinal. In addition, modern villas and entertaiment facilities have been accomplished for foreign expatriates by the Lake Tai.

A fairly developed range of community services and market mechanism have been built up to provide investors with one-stop service. Favourable investment climate has attracted a large number of businessmen from home and abroad. So far, some 130 industrial enterprises have been established with a total investment of 6 billion yuan including 74 foreign- funded enterprises with the investment of USD 694 million.


WUXI-SINGAPORE INDUSTRIAL PARK

Wuxi Singapore Industrial Park(WSIP) is jointly developed by the Singapore consortium headed by Singapore Technologies Industrial (STIC) and Wuxi New Zone Economic Dev. Corp. The WSIP covers a total of 10 km², which will be developed in phases. At present, Phase I covering 1 km² hasbeen completed including customized factory buildings, a medical and training centre, an international kindergarten, cafeteria and dorms. To provide expatriates with an ennvironment they are familiarized with, WSIP Investment Co., Ltd. is constructing a four-star business complex in Wuxi's downtown area. By the end of 1995, 28 MNCs have secured tenancy in WSIP can offer but also their well-reputed one-stop service inclusive of logistics, warehousing, recruitment and business licence application. High-tech projects in WSIP are eligible to preferential treatment such as Customs tariff exemptions and extra favourable tax rates.


LAKE TAIHU NATIONAL TOURIST RESORT ZONE

As one of the twelve national tourist resort zons qualified by the State Council, Wuxi Lake Taihu Lake Taihu National Tourist Resort Zone is located in the southwest part of Wuxi, 17 km away from the city center. Since its foundation in February 1993, four recreation units have been set up ,i.e., the Moon Rever Valley, the Blue Wave Reereation Village, the Beer Garden and International Fishing Center and a Buddhism holiday club. An epoch- making project is unveiled --the phenomenal Giant Buddha at Lingshan. This entails restoring an ancient Tang Dynasty Xiangfu Monastery with a history of over 1,360 years and erecting a 88m high bronze statue of the sacred Buddha. When completed, this will conjure up a Buddhist cultural, this will conjure up a Buddhist cultural complex embodying the Buddha, the Monastery, shopping streets, pagodas and commercial villas. Another landmark in the resort, a 18-hole international golf course, has also been launched.
